How to Use Embossing Folders for Beginners

Embossing folders are a fantastic tool to have if you're into paper crafting. They offer endless creative possibilities for adding texture, dimension, and interest to your paper crafting projects. By experimenting with different techniques and designs, you can discover new ways to make your cards and crafts truly unique and visually stunning, but here is a list of five tips to start with.
1. Create Textured Backgrounds
One of the most common uses of embossing folders is to create beautiful, textured backgrounds for your cards. The raised patterns add depth and interest, making your cards stand out.
Tip: For an elegant look, use a white or solid-colored cardstock with a subtle embossing folder design. Ink the raised portions lightly with a coordinating color to highlight the texture.
2. Add Dimension to Die Cuts
Enhance your die-cut shapes by embossing them with an embossing folder. This technique adds texture and interest, turning simple die cuts into striking embellishments.
Tip: Emboss your die cuts before or after cutting them out, depending on the look you want to achieve. For a cohesive design, emboss the background and the die cuts with the same pattern.

I used this Christmas sweater pattern embossing folder to make a background for the box lid. I prefer to die cut the needed shape first and then emboss it since the reversed way would flatten the raised portion.
3. Create Embossed Frames and Borders
Use embossing folders to create decorative frames and borders for your cards. This adds a professional and polished look to your projects.
Tip: Emboss a piece of cardstock and then cut it into strips or shapes to create custom frames and borders. Experiment with different embossing patterns to complement your card's theme.
4. Design Embossed Focal Points
Embossing folders can be used to create eye-catching focal points for your cards. Choose a detailed folder design and emboss a central element to make it the star of your project.
Tip: After embossing, highlight the focal point with additional embellishments like glitter, foil, or die-cut elements. This will draw attention to the embossed area and add a touch of glamour.
5. Highlight Embossed Patterns with Inking
Inking over embossed patterns is a great way to make the raised areas pop. This technique can create stunning effects and bring out the intricate details of your embossing folders.
Tip: Use a brayer or gently swipe an ink pad over the embossed surface to apply ink to the raised areas. For a more artistic look, try blending multiple ink colors.
I hope that using embossing folders will be fun for you as it is for me, and I am sure that you will find your own ways to use them as you go.
