2-Color Album Inspiration: Album Layout Ideas
This handmade album is honestly one of my all-time favorites. The bold black and yellow color combo, paired with a cute bee theme, turned out better than I imagined — and the best part? It’s super beginner-friendly!

I had a few bee and honeycomb die cuts in my stash, and that’s where the inspiration began. I did use just a touch of bee-themed patterned paper and white cardstock for messages, but you can totally skip that part and just stick to two cardstock colors — yellow and black worked beautifully here, but you can choose any two-color combo you like (I will also give you my suggestions below).
Why Two Colors Work So Well
Sometimes picking papers can feel a bit overwhelming. So many colors, patterns, textures… and then comes the part where you have to make them all work together. This album keeps things simple — and simplicity can be surprisingly striking! Limiting yourself to two cardstock colors not only saves time and stress but also gives your album a clean and cohesive look from start to finish.

10 Handmade Album Page Ideas (Only Two Colors Needed!)
Zig-Zag Folded Page
Create a fold-out or “opening window” style element with a tied cord. Perfect for hiding a message or photo inside!

Half Page with Decorative Edge
Use a decorative border on a half-page flap. Add a piece of patterned paper (or use your second color cardstock) for contrast.
Framed Photo with Stamped Image
Add a rectangle or square shape with pretty edges for a photo, and stamp a fun quote or sentiment beside it.
Simple Pocket Page
Make a pocket by gluing down just two edges of a die cut or plain rectangle. Tuck in mini cards, photos, or notes!

Pull-Out Page with Embossed Border
Decorate the edge with embossing folder — or doodle your own border using a pen. Add a pull tab for extra fun.

Circle Cut for Photo + Sentiment
A circular photo placement with a stamped or handwritten quote beside it adds a beautiful, balanced look.
Mini Photo Grid
Fit 4 or more small photos on a page. Polaroid-style frames (if you have the die cut) make it even cuter!

3D Die Cut Pieces with Text
Use foam tape to raise up little elements where you can jot down a date, location, or a sweet little thought.

Envelope Page
Glue an envelope to your page and tuck inside photo cards or tiny letters for an interactive touch.

“Blackboard” Effect Page
Use black cardstock as a background, and write your message with a white gel pen — or add thin floral die cuts or hand-drawn designs around a photo spot.
No cutting Machine? No problem!
If you’re just starting out and don’t have a die cutting machine like a Sizzix — don’t worry! You can absolutely still create these looks:
Patterned paper substitute: Cut out interesting images from magazines or use wrapping paper.
Stamped/embossed look: Use a fine black pen to handwrite messages or doodle little details.
Custom shapes: Cut decorative edges or photo placements by hand using scissors or shaped punches.
Craft scissors, paper punches, and even regular household tools can help you build pages that look fantastic — all without needing a huge supply stash. You can find more ideas in my earlier blog post.
Color Combo Ideas for Your Own 2-Color Album
While I used black and yellow for a bee-themed album, you can get creative with other combinations depending on your theme or occasion. Here are some simple and popular cardstock pairings:
Pink and Gray – soft, sweet, and perfect for baby or love-themed albums
Navy Blue and White – clean and classic
Green and Kraft (brown) – earthy and natural
Red and White – bold and great for holidays or birthdays
Purple and Cream – elegant and subtle
Orange and Black – fun for fall or Halloween albums
Light Blue and Yellow – cheerful and fresh
Black and Gold – chic and celebratory
Pick what you have at home or what’s easily available — no need to go shopping for fancy paper packs. The idea here is to keep things simple and fun!
