Even though summer is still in full swing and the heat is intense (at least where I am), the start of September feels like the beginning of fall to me - likely because of the school year starting. For any occasion that calls for a card or a handmade paper-crafted gift, I love incorporating autumn elements or colors. These often include motifs like leaves, pinecones, mushrooms, birds, and other natural elements in shades of yellow, red, brown, and orange. These touches bring the essence of autumn into my projects, turning them into beautiful and decorative pieces.

In situations where I want my card to also serve as a decorative element (a thoughtful gift that can adorn the recipient's home and perhaps even spark a conversation) I almost always choose to create pop-up cards. They require more time and skill to create, but the final result never fails to impress.

Color Your own Die-cut elements

The first time I made this type of card was for a friend's new home. I started with a pale yellow base and added a darker patterned paper with embossed text that fit the occasion. I die-cut the elements from white cardstock and used autumn-colored eyeshadow to shade them, blending it into the cardstock with a small sponge eyeshadow brush. This was my creative way of finding a more affordable alternative to distress ink. In addition, this way, the embossed lines on the die-cuts were visible, making the natural elements stand out even more.

Die-cut elements from colored cardstock

The second card of this type I made was for a September birthday. It features the same pale yellow base, the heat embossed sentiment matches the occasion, but the key differences are the use of bright-colored patterned paper and die-cut elements that aren't hand-colored but cut from colored cardstock. This makes the flower colors more vivid.

I enjoy making decorative pop-up cards since they offer a unique and captivating way to enhance any occasion. Their three-dimensional elements not only create a delightful surprise for the recipient but also serve as beautiful keepsakes. The intricate designs and vibrant details can transform a simple card into a striking piece of art, making each pop-up card a memorable and cherished gift that stands out for its creativity and craftsmanship. I hope you'll give it a try.
