Can I make cards without dies and stamps?
Absolutely. Patterned paper, cardstock, scissors, glue and printable sentiments are enough to make lots of different cards. Dies and punches can add beautiful decorative details, but they're not essential for creating a card that feels finished.
How do I stop my sentiment from getting lost on patterned paper?
Start with contrast. If your background is pale, try a darker sentiment. If the background is dark, a light sentiment may work better. And if the paper is particularly busy, give your sentiment a plain panel or solid colour block to sit on.
Can I use a large script sentiment on a busy background?
Yes! I used to avoid doing this, but the first card in this post changed my mind. The trick is to give the script a solid shape around it. Once the lettering has a clean background, it can be as decorative as you like.
What paper should I print sentiments on?
For sentiments that you'll cut out and attach to a card, I like cardstock around 175 gsm (65 lb) or heavier.
However, your printer's paper-handling capabilities matter too. If your printer doesn't handle thicker cardstock well, you can print the sentiment on regular paper and mount it onto cardstock afterwards. You can also use sticker paper if you prefer a peel-and-stick option.

What size should a printable sentiment be?
There isn't one perfect size. I usually place the sentiment on the card and move it around until it feels balanced with the other elements. If it seems to be taking over the whole card, make it smaller. If it gets lost, try making it larger or increasing the contrast.
